This publication focuses on the outcomes of the project Whaia Te Ara Ora: Understanding and Healing the Impact of Historical Trauma & Sexual Violence For Maori that was undertaken under the umbrella of a Kaupapa Maori Health Research Council programme He Kokonga Whare. The title Whaia Te Ara Ora originates in the purakau (traditional story) of Niwareka, who after experiencing abuse from her partner, Mataora, returned home to her people for healing and resolution. Whaia Te Ara Ora explores Maori views on historical and intergenerational trauma, the impact of sexual violence on Maori whanau, hapu and iwi, and how we can draw upon tikanga (cultural understandings and practices) for healing.
