Southern Transport was born out of financial necessity in 1946 when a timber company found itself in difficulties. It became the formidable business it remains today when 20-year-old Bill Richardson took charge in 1960. Seeking opportunities wherever they offered, by initiative, ingenuity and hard work, he built a transport company of such strength that it became the springboard for the formation of the HW Richardson Group. That, in turn, became one of New Zealand's largest privately-owned companies with a hugely diverse range of interests from the bottom of the country to the top, and across the Tasman as well. All that enterprise began with Southern Transport and the down-to-earth philosophy of its managing director, Bill Richardson, whose autobiography, Wheels and Deals, became a best-seller when published in 1999.
Bill Richardson died in 2005 but he and the people who have run the company since lived by one indisputable truth.
