On May 14, 1987, Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka along with soldiers from the Queen Elizabeth Barracks in gas masks hijacked and incarcerated the elected Fiji government of Timoci Bavadra - (the Fiji Labour Party and the National Federation Party coalition government. For the coup leader he claimed that he was protecting an elected government from the wrath of the indigenous nationalist Taukei Movement, which demonstrated its grievance through organized noisy demonstrations in April 1987.
Thursday, May 14th 1987 will be along remembered as the blackest day in Fijis history. Emeritus Professor, Satendra Nandan now after 30 years later, writes his first book giving us the first and the only personal account of what this heavy toll of the 1987 coup had taken on the lives of the victims who were the direct target.
