Description

This 56 page publication is the revised and updated fourth edition of Treaty of Waitangi Questions and Answers which was first published in 1989 by Network Waitangi.

The revised content is:

The updated expression in English of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Appendix 2A, now on page 53). Note, this expression is the result of input that NWO has received from te reo speakers over many years after wide and open consultation. The most recent conversation has been with Professor Margaret Mutu.

Updating of the Introduction - page 6 (previously pages 6 and 7).

Addition of Appendix 4 - 'There are two conflicting documents'.

Covering many historical and contemporary issues, it is for people who want to gain a basic knowledge about the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications, as well as for those who want to refresh and update their understanding.

It includes a summary of legislation and events since 1840 which have breached the Treaty, and a comprehensive reading list for further information.

Including additions and editing from Ngapuhi speaks authors Susan Healy and Ingrid Huygens, and from Joan Macdonald, Carl Chenery, Edwina Hughes, Rachael Harris, Moea Armstrong, Katherine Peet, and Averil Williams. 57 Questions (and answers) range from: How did authority and laws operate for Maori and Pakeha in the early years? Are Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Crowns English language version the same? Why are there differences between Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Crowns English-language version? What are the difficulties Maori face in regard to Maori land? What does Treaty-based constitutional change mean?
