This history is the result of detailed research and a bringing together of articles and writing on the subject.

The late Linda Moewaka Morrison's social history of Ohinemutu makes up the backbone of this book, also Richard Maj's history of the Rotorua music scene and Maori musicians and kapa haka of the area.

Also Ngahuia Te Awekotukus 1981 PhD, on the impact of tourism on Rotorua, was also crucial. Not only did she trace the development of kapa haka in Rotorua but also interviewed many of the main players.
