Te Ao O Te Maori : The World of the Maori

Maori migration, settlement, life, and interaction in New Zealand over time is essential learning in the Social Sciences curriculum. TE AO O TE MAORI is part of Continuity and Change as it is concerned with an event which impacted on the past, is impacting on the present, and will impact on the future. It addresses the understandings that the migration of tangata whenua is significant, that movement of people affects culture, that people remember and record the past in different ways, that events have causes and effects, and that ideas and actions of people in the past have had a significant impact. It is part of Place and Environment as it is concerned with relationships between people and the environment. It addresses the understandings that people have different perspectives on and uses of places, that exploration creates opportunities and challenges, and that movement between places affects people and places. It is part of The Economic World as it is concerned with ways in which people took part in economic activities. It addresses the understandings that people make decisions about resources, that producers and consumers have rights and responsibilities, that the way people manage resources impacts on environmental and social sustainability, and that people seek economic growth through enterprise and innovation. TE AO O TE MAORI is also part of Identity, Culture and Organisation as it is concerned with society and communities. It addresses the understandings that groups make decisions that impact on communities, and that people pass on and sustain culture and heritage.
