Description

Galleries of Maoriland looks at the uses and abuses of Maori art (and Maori in art) around the turn of the century - the world of Lindauer and Goldie, international exhibitions and museum re-creations of the ancient Maori world. Often spurned as kitsch and curio, or as colonial appropriation, Blackley instead finds in the surge of ethnological art and collecting an artistic world in which Maori were actually deeply involved - not only as subjects of art, but as artists, patrons, collectors and audiences. Blackley looks at the creation of Maori prehistory in Pakeha art; the enthusiasm of Maori for portraiture and recreations of ancient life; the trade in Maori curios; and the international exhibition of this colonial culture.

Roger Blackley is associate professor in art history at Victoria University of Wellington. He was curator of New Zealand historical art at Auckland Art Gallery for 15 years. Among a number of exhibition catalogues, he is the author of Goldie(Auckland Art Gallery/David Bateman, 1997).
