New Zealand has been a leader in earthquake design and construction for several decades.

The New Zealand Building Code has some of the most rigorous seismic performance requirements, even when compared to similarly earthquake-prone nations. Consequently, the performance of New Zealand buildings in severe seismic events is among the best in the world.

This guide includes all the elements within a building that are not part of the primary gravity or lateral force-resisting structure but are still required for the building to function.
